Blankets
I took some of my best shots of 2001 in the Indian State of Gujarat
after the terrible quake. The strength of the Indian people was
deeply inspiring and got me itching to visit this awesome country
once again. This shot was taken late in the afternoon when survivors
were fighting for blankets to keep themselves warm during the
cold nights. |

Red Cross
Another shot taken in India. Doctor Sagehashi of the Japanese
Red Cross performs a skin graft operation on 60-year old Miriam
Siddig at an emergency clinic at Sukhpar. It is very rare to
have this kind of operation at an emergency clinic in the field.
A representative of the Norwegian military medical forces expressed
to be "surprised and impressed." |

Mourning Woman
A woman tearfully mourns her best friend in Bhuj, February 1
2001. Her friend's body had finally been recovered after having
been buried in the rubble for almost a week. It was very painful
to see the deep sorrow of this woman. |
 |
Body and Cross
A shadow seems to throw a cross over the recovered body of a
victim. This is a horrible scene, but the shadow renders it very
serene. |

Universal Studios
Universal Studios Japan opened its first Amusement Park outside
the US and was so kind to choose my neighborhood: Osaka. I love
this shot of the Jurassic Park ride as it splashes wildly into
the water. |
 |
Popeye
What can I say? Aren't they a lovely pair? |

Luminarie
Millions of lights shine brilliantly at the annual 'Luminarie'
festival in Kobe, Japan. The festival was started in 1995 to
cheer up the inhabitants of the city after it was struck by a
devastating quake that killed more than 6,000 people. It was
the first time for me to get to the main piece. I was impressed. |

Hot Hot Hot
It was incredibly hot this Summer. I took this shot of a young
woman as she rushed by on the steaming street. Undoubtable on
her way to an air conditioned space. I like the out-of-focus
aspect of this shot. |

Woman & Child
Rita Kok, wife of Dutch Prime Minister Wim Kok, talks with a
little girl at the opening of her textile art exposition at the
Design Museum in Kyoto, Japan on October 22 2001. Kok talked
with few people, but she clearly liked talking with this little
girl. |
 |
Face & Hands
One of my personal works. I really like the woman's expression
and the power of the colors. Thanks Meari! |
 |
Koizumi
LDP president-candidate Junichiro Koizumi speaks on the stump
in Kobe, Japan on April 20. Not long after I took this shot he
became the Prime Minister. |
 |
Lost
And this guy lost his job... I got a shot of the then Prime Minister
Mori at a welcome party for the IOC evaluation commission at
Osaka's Rihga Royal Hotel on February 28 2001. He seems a bit
lost. Already then people started to ignore him. |
 |
Makiko Tanaka
Japanese politician Makiko Tanaka. Simultaneously enormously
popular and controversial. After being elected prime minister
in April 2001Junichiro Koizumi appointed her as the first female
Minister of Foreign Affairs in Japan. I got the chance to interview
and shoot her during a short visit to Osaka. |

Shaken
Yoshio Yamane, the visibly shaken head of the Ikeda primary school
where 8 people, mostly 6 and 7-year olds, died after a knife
attack on June 8 2001. Unshaven and chaotic Yamane burst out
in tears several times during a conference on June 9 2001. |
