Hurricane Katrina Donations

Thursday, September 1, 2005 Posted: 01:46 PM JST

I have seen my fair share of disasters. I covered the Tsunami damage in Indonesia and Sri Lanka (2004), disastrous earthquakes in Taiwan (1999) and India (2001), and survived the quake that killed 6,400 people in Kobe and environs (1995). So the images of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina leave a deep impression. I feel for the victims and survivors. My thoughts are with you.

The now legendary Sir Ernest Mason Satow (1843-1929) was a member of the British legation in Tokyo for twenty-one years. This classic book is based on the author's detailed diary, personal encounters, and keen memory. In it, Satow records the history of the critical years of social and political upheaval that accompanied Japan's first encounters with the West around the time of the Meiji Restoration. Fascinating.
