Cool Sites : Nationalism in Japan

With important national elections just around the corner, and WWII Prime Minister Tojo's granddaughter ready to campaign, it is a good time to think about resurgent nationalism in Japan. Here is a list of some sites about Japanese nationalism:

That David McNeill article giving personal experience of the right-wing thuggery that tries to silence anyone not towing the line is a real gem. Thank you so much for bringing this to the wider attention of the foreign community in Japan. It is really striking and so valuable to have a personal account of this very real phenomenon which one hears a lot about but is shielded from. The research too is extremely valuable in being able to cite specific examples. This kind of Nazi tactic is happening right now in front of our eyes, and to avoid it or keep quiet is akin to collusion. I for one would like to give David McNeill my full support and I hope that I have the physical courage (though I'm a shameless coward) to stand up behind him when it counts.

Thanks, John. I totally agree and am standing shoulder to shoulder with you.

Rising nationalism is a worrisome problem all over the world, and America's (read George Bush's) actions of the past few years unfortunately has offered it legitimacy under the deceitful cover of "war against terror."

The now legendary Sir Ernest Mason Satow (1843-1929) was a member of the British legation in Tokyo for twenty-one years. This classic book is based on the author's detailed diary, personal encounters, and keen memory. In it, Satow records the history of the critical years of social and political upheaval that accompanied Japan's first encounters with the West around the time of the Meiji Restoration. Fascinating.
